Applying the Otago Falls Prevention Program in Practice

Injury Matters offers falls prevention training for allied health professionals in Western Australia that work with older adults living in the community. 

The Applying the Otago Falls Prevention Program in Practice training is a half-day workshop for exercise-based falls prevention, based on the international Otago Exercise Program principles. This interactive workshop explores the knowledge and skills required for allied health professionals to effectively screen, implement, and assess the outcome of exercise-based falls prevention interventions. Each workshop includes the following content: 

  • Background and impact of falls 
  • Risk factors for falls  
  • Theoretical concepts of balance and postural control to support assessment and interventions  
  • Screening tools and Multifactorial assessment 
  • Falls risk classification and intervention algorithms linked to the World Guidelines for Falls Prevention (Montero-Odasso, et al., 2022) and the Australian Falls Prevention Guidelines (ACSQHC, 2025) 
  • Evidence – based falls prevention guidelines and recommendations for strength and balance interventions 
  • Otago Falls Prevention Program principles, limitations, and adaptations 
  • Outcome measurement tools 
  • Stay On Your Feet® program 

All workshops are delivered by a Registered Physiotherapist.

Workshop duration: 3 hours

Workshop format: In-person

This workshop can be delivered in the Perth Metropolitan area and, with notice, regional Western Australia. Please contact the Injury Matters team via [email protected] for any questions about regional delivery.

Please note: The organisation placing a workshop booking must provide a suitable venue, consisting of the following requirements: Room size that allows for group activities, chairs, desks (preferred), screen or projector with laptop connectivity and audio speakers, and internet access.

Who should attend?

This training is suitable for allied health professionals with an interest in exercise and older adults, including Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, Exercise Physiologists, and Registered Nurses.

Cost: $550 per workshop (inclusive of GST)

Payment: Injury Matters will arrange payment via invoice upon workshop confirmation.

Learning objectives:

  1. Increase your awareness of falls prevalence and the importance of falls prevention. 
  2. Increase your knowledge of falls risk factors and how this drives assessment and interventions 
  3. Increase your understanding of balance and postural control 
  4. Increase your knowledge of up-to-date, evidence-based, appropriate multifactorial falls and balance screening, assessment and intervention guidelines for older adults 
  5. Increase your awareness of the Otago Falls Prevention Program.
