2023 causes of death data  

The Australian Bureau of Statistics has recently released the 2023 Australian Causes of Death. When breaking down the Western Australia data, it indicates that 1,549 Western Australians died due to an injury in 2023 with the leading causes being; falls (n=570), intentional self-harm (n=417) and poisoning (n=182). The Australasian Injury Prevention Network’s (AIPN) is seeking input from members with expertise in alcohol-related harm to contribute to the AIPN submission to the Australian Government’s Inquiry into the Health Impacts of Alcohol and Other Drugs.

Your insights could play a pivotal role in shaping national policies aimed at reducing harm from alcohol misuse, improving public health outcomes, and guiding future prevention strategies.

Consultation is open for the Updated National Falls Guidelines

The public consultation for the updated Falls Guidelines is now open. The new guidelines will replace the 2009 version and have been informed by the latest research, led by Neuroscience Research Australia in collaboration with the Australian and New Zealand Falls Prevention Society.

Be sure to complete the online survey to have your say on the draft guidelines tailored for three key settings: Residential Aged Care Services, Community Care and Hospitals.

The online survey is open until 20 November 2024.

AIHW Family, domestic and sexual violence (FDSV) Update

In the latest update AIHW provides first time reporting for the Outcomes Framework 2023-2032 and updated hospitalisations data. The website brings together information from a range of sources to provide a comprehensive picture of FDSV in Australia.

AIHW Child Protection Australia 2022-23: Safety of Children in care Update

The initial report, Insights, released in July 2024 provided an overview of children in the child protection system, this recent update now presents data on the safety and abuse of children in care.

Older Adult Mental Health Model of Service: Consultation Opportunity

The WA Country Health Service (WACHS) is developing the state’s first Older Adult Mental Health Model of Service (MoS).

Recognising the diversity of people residing in WA and to ensure the MoS is culturally secure, the Project Steering Committee is seeking further input from older persons of multicultural backgrounds, with a lived or living experience of mental illness, multicultural groups, communities and organisations, carers and families, health professionals, aged and community care providers working with older adults with a mental illness.

Managing Fatigue Risks at Work: Consultation Opportunity

Safe Work Australia is developing a model Code of Practice to provide guidance for PCBUs on fatigue risks at work. The draft model Code of Practice has now been developed and Safe Work Australia is seeking a wide range of views on the draft to refine the model.

Submissions close November 27.
