Guide to grant writing step 2: Project overview and setting objectives

Applications are now open for Move Your Body grants of up to $5,000 (plus GST) to deliver community-based falls prevention projects in Western Australia from September to November 2025. The Move Your Body campaign educates older adults on building strength and balance to prevent falls and promote healthy ageing.

After you have done all the hard work of laying the foundation of your grant proposal, you are ready to start writing your grant application.

Project overview

Provide a clear description and outline of your proposed grant project including:

  • Project aim and links to the objectives of the program (Move Your Body risk factors)
  • Who will the project target?
  • How long will it run? (A timeline graphic of activities can be included)
  • What evidence-based activities or strategies you are implementing? If proposing an exercises-based program, provide an overview of the exercises involved
  • Who will be involved in delivering the project?
  • How will you promote your grant activities and recruit participants? (E.g. advertising, engaging with the media, printing flyers and posters).

Setting your objectives

The program objectives should align with the Move Your Body modifiable risk factors strength and balance and be specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound (SMART). Consider what activities you will implement to address them.

Do you want the program to increase awareness and knowledge of strength and balance exercises for falls prevention, increase the intention of continuing to participate in strength and balance exercises to prevent falls, or increase the strength and balance levels of older adults? Examples of objectives for a Move Your Body grant program:

  • Participating in the grant program will result in 50% of participants demonstrating increased knowledge of strength and balance exercises for fall prevention.
  • To deliver a 10-week community-based strength and balance exercise program for 30 older adults, with at least 60% showing increased strength and balance levels.

Addressing current needs and priority populations

Here is your opportunity to explain how the project will address the current needs in your community.

  • What is the proportion of older adults in your community, including those in high-risk priority populations? (Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, culturally and linguistically diverse populations, regional and remote communities or people living with a disability)
  • Use local data and statistics on falls among older adults in your community
  • Highlight gaps in current services and how your project will help fill them

Demonstrate how you will involve priority populations in your project and give details on how your grant activities will be adapted to involve these populations in the planning and delivery.

Examples of strategies

  • Using interpreters
  • Engaging with multicultural and/or Aboriginal community organisations and groups to co-design culturally appropriate resources or grant activities and promote participation.
  • Adapting strength and balance exercises for people living with a disability (offer seated or adapted exercises)
  • Adapting resources to be in large print for people with low vision
  • Ensuring the venue is accessible for all people
