As evident by the summary graphic below, during the 2022/23 financial year Injury Matters continued to provide support to Western Australians affected by road trauma via the Road Trauma Support WA Service.
Within the provision of the Service, there are four primary service elements aimed to reduce the psycho-social impact of road trauma through specialised information and support; community engagement; education and training; and grief, loss and bereavement counselling to Western Australians impacted by a road crash.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone that took the time to provide us with feedback on our Service via the Road Trauma Support WA 2023 Annual Survey. Overall, 86 individuals completed the survey, giving us an insight into their engagement with the Service, the impact of the Service and how Injury Matters can continue to support all Western Australian’s affected by road trauma.
Reflective of the Services support for all individuals affected by a road traffic incident in WA, survey respondents noted various involvements in a road traffic incident, were located across the state and engaged with the Service at different periods following the road traffic incident.
Each element of the Service has a different primary focus, however overall the survey respondents agreed that the service elements were valuable;
- 89% of counselling clients agreeing that the counselling provided them with the support to look after themselves or others,
- 89% of respondents who accessed resources agreeing that it increased their knowledge of how road trauma affects people,
- 83% individuals who accessed the enquiry service agreeing that it provided them with the information they required and
- 79% of workshop attendees agreeing that the presentation increased their knowledge of the impact of road trauma in WA.
The majority of survey respondents indicated that RTS WA is an essential service for the WA community (89.0%, n=73), which is reflected in multiple comments complimenting the Service, including;
“The Service presents a different view at times to bring you out of the dark.”
“So thankful for your time, help and support.”
“I was really satisfied with the service that I got.”
“Thank you for your support at a time when I really needed it.”
“Clarified my understanding, validated my feelings and gave me objective, nonjudgmental support.”
Common themes provided around recommendations for the future of the Service included; generating greater awareness of the Service and what is offered, providing additional regional workshops and facilitating peer support groups.
