Welcome to our Bunuru (Summer) eNews.
March is Bunuru (or Bun-nur), and is represented by the colour orange. Bunuru is the hottest time of the year with little to no rain. Expect hot easterly winds with a cooling sea breeze most afternoons – if you’re close to the coast.
This quarter, RTSWA has continued to engage with regional and metropolitan communities, first responders and hospital staff to support those impacted by road trauma and raise awareness across the state.
In mid‑March, we visited our regional communities Albany and Katanning, delivering presentations to local hospital staff and St John WA teams as well as meeting with local government.
Our Carnarvon trip was postponed due to a cyclone. We look forward to rescheduling this trip and meeting with the Carnarvon community soon.
We extend our sincere thanks to everyone who supported our regional visits and took the time to meet with our team.
Our counselling team provided support to teachers and students at the Project Road Smart event in Bunbury in February, supporting broader community road safety initiatives.
In the metro region, our hospital engagement continued, including a presentation to the Royal Perth Hospital Compassionate Care Education Unit, and the commencement of professional development sessions at Perth Children’s Hospital, focusing on how our program can support staff and patients impacted by road trauma. Presentations were also delivered to Advocare and during WA Police Family Liaison Officer training.

We’d love for you to connect with us and follow along as we share fresh content, including behind-the-scenes insights from our regional engagement trips, program updates, and easy to share infographics designed to support community awareness around road trauma.

New Factsheets
We recently launched our new EMDR and Supportive Conversations factsheets.
The EMDR factsheet provides a clear, accessible overview for anyone who has heard of EMDR but is unsure what it involves.
Our Supportive Conversations factsheet is an equally valuable resource, offering practical guidance for navigating important discussions with someone who may have been impacted by road trauma

Media Toolkit
We’re excited to introduce our new “Connect & Share” media toolkit — a simple, ready‑to‑use resource designed to help you easily share RTSWA information with your networks across any preferred communication channel.

In the Media
In the last quarter, the team has been grateful for the opportunity to speak on Noongar Radio and Great Southern FM, raising awareness about our program.
Our General Manager of Recovery Support, Ian Holbrook, provided commentary to Channel 7, Channel 10 and ABC News, offering insights into the significant community impact following the Dalkeith crash that resulted in the death of Elizabeth Pearce.

Team Learning and Development Highlights
Heading into 2026 with a strong focus on improving service awareness and accessibility across WA, our team has spent the last quarter building new skills and expanding our knowledge to better support the community.
Our team was fortunate to receive an insightful presentation from Dr Kate Derry of the Transforming Indigenous Mental Health and Wellbeing Project at UWA. Dr Derry provided an in‑depth overview of the Social and Emotional Wellbeing (SEWB) model, offering valuable perspectives that will support our ongoing efforts to ensure our services remain inclusive, culturally informed, and accessible.
We also had the privilege of the Strong Spirit Strong Minds team delivering Part 1 of the Ways of Working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples training to us, further strengthening our understanding and approach to supporting these communities across the state.
Members of our team attended the Wungening Aboriginal Corporation’s Decolonising Data, Evaluation and Research Forum, which highlighted the importance of Aboriginal Data Sovereignty and the shift from deficit‑focused to strength‑based data. Congratulations to the Wungening team for facilitating such an inspiring and thought‑provoking event.
Upcoming Travel
The team will be travelling to Merredin, Broome, Derby and Fitzroy Crossing in the next quarter.
