The State Public Health Plan 2025-2030 was launched on 4 June 2025, providing a strategic framework to improve the health and wellbeing of the WA community.
State Public Health Plan 2025-2030
The State Public Health Plan 2025-2030 plan has been developed by the WA Department of Health to guide and support Local Governments, non-government organisations, and communities in making decisions about public health planning in WA.
The plan outlines statewide public health priorities for WA and provides a roadmap for the next five years to work towards health and wellbeing for Western Australians.
What does this mean for Local Governments in WA?
Local Governments play a significant role in developing, coordinating and delivering injury prevention and community safety policies and programs in their local area. When conducting injury prevention activities, it not only reduces the risk of an injury occurring, but it also improves the overall health of the population and an individual’s quality of life.
Following the release of the State Public Health Plan, a mandatory requirement is now in place for Local Government Public Health Plans to be prepared and published by 4 June 2026. Public health planning as a mandatory requirement falls under Part 5 of the Public Health Act 2016, which states that a local public health plan must be prepared by each Local Government.
Public Health Plans provide useful frameworks to support the prioritisation of community safety and injury prevention activities conducted by your Local Government. While local public health plans must be consistent with the State Public Health Plan, they should be tailored and adapted to the local health needs and priorities of each Local Government area.
More information about Public Health Planning for Local Governments can be found on the WA Department of Health website.
