Midwest Road Trip

In May, Injury Matters headed to the Midwest for a busy and rewarding trip focused on injury prevention and safety promotion. The team spent time in Geraldton, Morawa and Dongara delivering training for health professionals, supporting local government, providing community education, and meeting with community organisations to chat about all things injury prevention.

A highlight of the trip was the Improve Your Health community event delivered in partnership with the QEII Seniors and Community Centre. The event shared practical falls prevention messages, including checking medicines, eating well, and staying mentally and physically active. Attendees were able to connect with local services and volunteers that support healthy ageing. It was a valuable opportunity to bring community members and health professionals together around simple, evidence-informed strategies for ageing well.

During the visit, the team delivered two workshops to Geraldton Hospital staff. The first, Active Balance for Falls Prevention, focused on recognising falls risk, incorporating safe exercise practices, and apply effective strategies to help prevent falls. In partnership with Advocare and Regional Alliance West, Injury Matters also facilitated the Recognising and Responding to Elder Abuse in Older Adults workshop, prompting valuable discussion around identifying warning signs and taking appropriate action to address elder abuse.

The Injury Matters team engaged with older adults in communities across the Midwest region to raise awareness of falls prevention strategies. Four Stay On Your Feet® falls prevention presentations were delivered to groups, including:

  • Morawa Community Resource Centre
  • Arcadia Waters Geraldton
  • Dongara Community Resource Centre
  • Dongara Living Well Expo

The team met with local government, community organisations, local parliament and media representatives to talk through local priorities, challenges and opportunities for strengthening injury prevention initiatives.

Beyond the workshops and meetings, it was a pleasure to experience the stunning Midwest region and connect with the people who call it home. The visit was marked by genuine interest, thoughtful conversations, and a strong sense of collaboration in supporting safer, healthier communities.

We strive to be culturally sensitive as we represent the Western Australian community in our imagery.
