Alcohol and injury – Staying safe this festive season

The holidays in Australia mean sunshine, celebrations, and time with loved ones. From backyard BBQs to summer gatherings and office parties, it’s easy for the drinks to flow—and for overindulgence to sneak in.

Alcohol consumption often spikes during this time, and so do the risks. According to a 2022 Cancer Council report, every week in WA alcohol is linked to:

  • 8 deaths
  • 402 hospitalisations
  • 180 family violence assaults

Each month, more than 1,000 hospitalisations occur due to alcohol-related injuries.

The good news? You can still enjoy the season without going overboard. Here are some smart tips for safer celebrations:

Plan Ahead

Decide your limits before the event. Set a drink goal and stick to it. Organise safe transport early so you’re not making decisions after drinking.

Know Your Triggers

Stress, peer pressure, or certain settings can lead to risky drinking. Identify what makes you drink more and plan strategies—like bringing a supportive friend.

Set Boundaries

Alternate alcoholic drinks with water or soft drinks, pace yourself, and try alcohol-free options. Start with a non-alcoholic drink and avoid topping up your glass so you can track your intake.

Keep Track

It’s easy to lose count at parties. Use a drink tracker app or keep a mental note. Remember: standard drinks vary by beverage type.
