Order of Australia – Emeritus Professor Peter Howat

Injury Matters congratulates past Injury Matters President Emeritus Professor Peter Howat on his recent recipient of the Order of Australia for his significant service to public health education and promotion, and to the community.

Professor Howat is a key figure in health promotion in Western Australia, having authored over 400 academic publications and been the inaugural President of the Western Australian Professional Health Educators Association. Peter has researched the planning, implementation and evaluation of many experimental programs, particularly regarding health promotion interventions in the community setting.

Peter’s contribution to injury prevention in Western Australia includes being instrumental in establishing the WA Alcohol Advisory Council and the National Drug Research Institute, and actively being involved in countless injury prevention projects, including road safety, gun control, alcohol harm minimisation, and mental health.

This latest honour is a credit to Peter’s dedication to bridging research gaps, influencing public health policy and ultimately improving population health in Western Australia. Congratulations Peter on your well-deserved King’s Day honour and thank you for your ongoing impact on injury prevention in WA.

We strive to be culturally sensitive as we represent the Western Australian community in our imagery.
