Supporting older adults with chronic health conditions to look after their feet

For older adults living with chronic health conditions, looking after their feet can be an important part of maintaining mobility, independence, and reducing falls risk. Foot-related concerns can add another layer of complexity, particularly when pain, changes in sensation or difficulty finding appropriate footwear affect the way a person walks.

Conditions such as diabetes and arthritis can affect foot health in different ways

Diabetes can damage nerves in the feet and reduce blood flow, while arthritis can cause joint pain, stiffness and reduced movement. These changes may affect a person’s comfort, mobility and ability to participate in everyday activities. For example, diabetic peripheral neuropathy can cause numbness, tingling, pain or weakness, with symptoms often beginning in the feet. Osteoarthritis can affect the feet and cause pain, stiffness, swelling and reduced movement.

What do the Australian Falls Guidelines say

The Australian Falls Guidelines recognise feet and footwear as important considerations in preventing falls, alongside factors such as balance and mobility, medicines, continence, vision, and the home environment. The Guidelines emphasise the use of interventions tailored to an older person’s individual fall risk and circumstances.

Health professionals are well placed to make foot health part of routine conversations with older adults, particularly those managing chronic health conditions. Consider asking about foot pain or discomfort, numbness or changes in sensation, difficulties with walking or balancing, and whether footwear is comfortable and well-fitting. Provide education and information on safe shoes, managing foot problems, and improving foot care. Where concerns are identified, consider referring to a podiatrist for assessment.

Falls prevention often requires a multidisciplinary approach that actively involves the older person, their carers and family. Supporting foot health can help older adults remain active, participate in activities that matter to them, and maintain their independence. Encourage older adults to look after their feet and wear safe footwear.
