The Injury Matters team, together with Scott Ewen from Onyx Movement, recently visited Derby to connect with local older adults. Invited by Marnin Bowa Dumbara, the team delivered two community workshops that shared practical messages from the Stay On Your Feet® falls prevention program.
Exercise was central to both sessions. Participants practised movements supporting leg strength, balance and everyday activities such as standing from a chair, walking confidently and changing direction. Activities were adaptable, showing that movement does not need to be complicated and that small, regular efforts can help people feel stronger and steadier.
Participants also learned how to get down to the ground and back up again. With step-by-step coaching, they worked at their own pace and considered when a stable support might help. The activity prompted useful discussion about what to do after a fall: pause and check for injury, call for help when needed, and avoid trying to stand if it may be unsafe.
Conversation was another important part of the workshops. Participants exchanged experiences, asked thoughtful questions and explored the many factors that can influence falls risk. Their willingness to have a go, encourage one another and share local knowledge made the sessions practical, positive and engaging.
The Derby visit reinforced that falls prevention is not about limiting activity or becoming overly cautious. It is about building the strength, skills, knowledge and confidence to keep moving safely, maintain independence and continue participating in community life.
Thank you to Marnin Bowa Dumbara and everyone who joined the workshops and contributed so openly.
