Our feet work hard every day so we can stay active, independent, and doing the things we enjoy like playing with the grandchildren, gardening, shopping, exercising, and travelling. Yet foot health is often overlooked. Podiatry Week, taking place from 12-18 October 2026, shines a spotlight on the importance of foot and ankle health and the important role podiatrists play in helping people stay mobile, support healthy ageing, and enjoy a better quality of life.
Healthy feet supports balance, movement, and can help prevent falls. When foot problems such as pain, deformities, reduced sensation, or poorly fitting footwear occur, everyday activities can become more difficult and the risk of falls increase. Falls prevention in older adults is one of the many important areas where podiatrists contribute to better health outcomes. Podiatrists can help with things like:
- foot and ankle problems such as pain, bunions, blisters, ulcers, corns and calluses
- nail care and skin conditions
- finding the right footwear that is comfy, supportive, and fits well
- manage diabetes-related foot problems and complex wounds
- walk safely and move around confidently.
There are simple ways to support your foot health and reduce the risk of falls. Regularly check your feet for changes. If you notice any changes or are having foot pain, see a podiatrist. Watch the video below for tips on how to look after your feet.
