With the next Stay On Your Feet® Remove Hazards campaign launching in September, Injury Matters congratulates the successful grant recipients who have commenced planning their community-based falls prevention grant programs.
Remove Hazards is one part of the Move Improve Remove messaging that encourages older adults to stay active, independent, and prevent falls. Remove Hazards focuses on home safety, eye health, and foot health to prevent falls and support healthy ageing.
Ishar will deliver a tailored pilot program designed to reduce falls risk among older women from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds participating in the Women of Many Nations (WOMN) and Carers groups.
The project aims to improve participants’ ability to identify and remove home hazards, increase awareness of vision and foot health as falls risk factors, and build strength, balance, and confidence through safe physical activity. Key program features include:
- Interactive home safety education, including hazard identification, translated resources, and practical safety items such as non-slip mats and night lights.
- Health education sessions delivered by allied health professionals focusing on eyesight, foot care, safe footwear, and mobility.
- Weekly culturally appropriate exercise sessions, such as Tai Chi to improve balance and mobility.

The Shire of Narembeen Community Resource Centre will deliver “Mind Your Step Month”, a falls prevention initiative for older adults. The project consists of three expert-led workshops including:

- Home safety workshop delivered by an occupational therapist. Focusing on identifying common household hazards, reducing slips and trips, and demonstrating assistive equipment such as grab rails, non-slip aids, mobility supports, and personal alarms.
- Strength and balance workshop delivered by a local fitness instructor. Providing practical exercises to improve strength, balance, flexibility, and mobility safely at home.
- Foot health and safe footwear workshop delivered by a podiatrist. Covering appropriate footwear selection, foot health, balance, mobility, and strategies to reduce falls risk through better foot care.
The Shire of Wyalkatchem will deliver a series of community sessions for older adults, their carers, support workers, and the broader community. Key activities include:
- Interactive education on identifying and reducing home hazards.
- A mock living-room display where participants identify potential risks and discuss practical solutions.
- Education on the relationship between eye health and falls prevention.
- Information on maintaining healthy vision and preventing falls through regular eye care.
- Discussions exploring home safety improvements made by participants and what changes have been made to prevent falls.

Chung Wah Community Care (CWCC) will deliver the “Make Your Home Safer & Check Your Eyesight” project between September and November 2026 at its Balcatta and Willetton community hubs. The project aims to improve home safety awareness and increase knowledge of eye health among culturally and linguistically diverse older adults. The project targets multicultural seniors who may face language barriers, low health literacy, social isolation, and limited access to mainstream health information. Activities will be delivered in trilingual and culturally inclusive settings to maximise accessibility and engagement. Key project activities include:

- Home safety education sessions featuring interactive “Spot the Hazard” activities that help participants identify common household hazards.
- Development of a trilingual Home Safety Bingo activity and take-home Home Safety Checklist to reinforce key falls prevention messages and encourage participants to assess their own homes.
- Demonstrations of daily living aids and falls prevention equipment, including mobility supports, non-slip products, and home safety devices.
- Eye health education sessions covering vision changes associated with ageing, the connection between vision and falls, strategies to maintain healthy eyesight, and the importance of regular eye examinations.
- Falls prevention and eye health promotion through CWCC’s Good Times in Perth radio and YouTube channels, local Chinese newspapers, and QR-code linked resources to extend community reach.
