Spring is the perfect time to clear clutter, freshen up your home, and make it safer. Simple changes around the house can reduce trip hazards and help prevent falls.
You do not need to do everything at once. Start with one room, one cupboard or one walkway. If something is heavy, hard to reach or unsafe to move on your own, ask a family member, friend, carer, or neighbour for help.
A guide to declutter your home
Bathroom and medicine cabinet: Check the expiry on medicines and remove empty containers. Take unwanted or expired medicines to your local pharmacy for safe disposal. Ensure bathmats are non-slip and in good condition. If you feel unsteady in the bathroom, ask your doctor or another health professional about rails and equipment that could help.
Kitchen: Keep everyday items within easy reach so you do not need to climb or stretch. Keep floors clear of items and dry.
Bedroom: Keep the walkway around the bed clear. Tuck in bedding, put away extra winter blankets as the weather warms up, and make sure there is a clear path to the door.
Living areas and walkways: Clear hallways, doorways and paths around furniture. Remove shoes, bags, boxes, cords and other items that could cause a trip. Make sure there is enough space to move safely through each room.
Mats and rugs: Check that mats sit flat and do not move underfoot. Curling edges or loose rugs can become trip hazards, so consider removing them or using non-slip backing.
Lighting: Replace any light bulbs that are not working and check that darker areas are well lit. Hallways, entrances, stairs and outdoor paths may benefit from brighter lighting or a sensor light.
Garden and outdoor areas: Clear paths of hoses, pots, gardening tools and overgrown plants. Store equipment in a dedicated place so it is not left in walkways. If a ladder is needed, ask someone to help.

A spring clean can do more than make your home feel fresh and clear the mind. By clearing clutter and checking for trip hazards, you can reduce your risk of falls, move around with more confidence, and make the rest of your cleaning easier.
