The Injury Prevention Summit is a one-day event held biennially by Injury Matters, via the Know Injury program, with funding from the Western Australian Department of Health.

The Injury Prevention Summit will connect injury prevention and safety promotion practitioners, policymakers, and representatives from Local Governments across WA to facilitate collaboration and exchange injury prevention knowledge, ideas, and information.

The two sessions for the day include Unlocking potential: Technological innovation and insights and Shaping tomorrow: Driving positive injury outcomes in WA.

Through a series of interactive exercises, attendees will be guided through structured approaches to creative problem-solving, learning how to move from challenge statements to tangible early-stage solutions. Meet the Speakers

Dr Lisa Sharwood
University of New South Wales

Dr Lisa Sharwood is an experienced epidemiologist specialising in injury, public health, and health services research with 20 years of experience in academic, government, and industry settings.

She is dedicated to advocating for health and health system optimisation through data driven strategies and translating evidence-based findings to improve practice and policy for cost-effective health care.

Dr Lisa Sharwood is currently building Australia’s first National Injury Surveillance system using machine learning, in partnership with AIHW, ACCC, and other stakeholders.

Rachel Radcliffe
Aboriginal Health Council of WA

Rachel Radcliffe is a Yamatji Martu woman living and working on Whadjuk Noongar Boodjar. Rachel completed a Bachelor of Health Science at Edith Cowan University and, in 2022, was a successful recipient of the Australian Health Promotion Association scholarship program.

Rachel then joined the Aboriginal Health Council of WA (AHCWA) as a Tackling Indigenous Smoking Program Officer. She now works as the Social and Emotional Wellbeing (SEWB) Program Manager within AHCWA’s Health and Wellbeing Team, overseeing a SEWB Pilot Program, a Family, Domestic and Sexual Violence Pilot Program, and the Culture Care Connect suicide prevention program.

Tina Nyoni Milambo
City of Wanneroo

Tina Nyoni Milambo has over 10 years of experience in regulatory compliance, environmental risk management, and public health services. Born and raised in Zambia Tina moved to Australia in 2005 and completed a Bachelor of Environmental Health Science at Edith Cowan University (ECU).

Tina’s career journey has been shaped by multidisciplinary qualifications across environmental health, leadership, management, and business. Before moving to Australia, she worked at a border post in Zambia, gaining valuable experience in immigration processes, public safety, and compliance management. Her international experiences living in Botswana and South Africa developed a deep understanding of diverse cultures and community.

Catherine Purnell
Department of Energy, Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety Consumer Protection Division

Catherine Purnell is a Principal Product Safety Officer in the Legislation and Policy Directorate at Consumer Protection.
Catherine coordinates product safety functions under the Australian Consumer Law to ensure consumer goods and product-related services are safe.

This includes providing support and advice to the Department’s Inspectors and Compliance and Investigations Officers on mandatory safety standards, banned products, recalls and safety warning notices. Catherine’s role also manages responses to emerging hazards, participates in national product safety projects and works with the Department’s media and community education officers to promote product safety.

Michael Small
University of WA

Michael is the Director of the UWA Data Institute and CSIRO-UWA Chair of Complex System. He is the Professor of Applied Mathematics at UWA and works on a variety of data-driven applications of modern mathematics and computation. These include predicting asset failure for the mining industry, modelling of cardiac arrhythmia and predicting the onset of arrhythmia, simulating the spread of infectious disease, and applications to mental health.

Dotahn Caspi
Alcohol and Drug Foundation

Dotahn Caspi is a digital leader with over 15 years’ experience in large-scale digital projects, user experience design, and transformational digital solutions for community programs. He brings creative solutions to life, from live video installations to digital program transformations, with a passion for meaningful use of technology.

As Digital Manager at the Alcohol and Drug Foundation, Dotahn led the development of “dib,” an innovative AI chatbot that breaks down barriers to accessing critical health information. His recent AI expertise includes establishing expert advisory groups, developing ethical frameworks, and implementing safe-use policies for organisations grappling with the AI disruption.

Elliot Sawers
WA Council of Social Services

Elliot Sawers is the Training and Partnerships Lead on the WA Digital Inclusion Project, with extensive experience in project management, collaborative initiatives, and innovative workplace methodologies across public, private, and not-for-profit sectors.

With a strong background in education and digital inclusion, Elliot has taught at Curtin University and across Western Australia and the UK. In his role as the Training and Partnerships Lead on the WA Digital Inclusion Project, Elliot has a passion for supporting diverse communities across WA.

Ashleigh Dickson
East Metropolitan Health Service

Ashleigh is the Innovation Manager at East Metropolitan Health Service, where she coordinated the innovation program for 15,000 staff and a community of 850,000 patients over 5 hospitals. Here, she is responsible for bringing new ideas and technologies into our public hospitals.

Alongside this role, Ashleigh is also the Founder and CEO at Hello Initiative, a not-for-profit that works with young people engaged in the criminal justice system. In recognition of her work to bring innovation to the social and community sector, Ashleigh was a finalist for the Young Australian of the Year in 2021.

Rachael Warner
East Metropolitan Health Service

Rachael is a seasoned government innovation professional dedicated to transforming healthcare through systems improvement and human-centred design. Her expertise lies in optimizing processes, fostering collaboration, and implementing innovative strategies that enhance healthcare delivery.

Passionate about creating sustainable, people-first solutions, Rachael works to ensure policies and services truly meet the needs of communities. Her leadership and forward-thinking approach make her a catalyst for impactful healthcare reforms, shaping a more effective and compassionate system for all.
