The Western Australian Government has consistently committed to supporting the development of a sustainable and diverse sport and recreation system in WA that encourages participation, develops talent and contributes to the health and wellbeing of individuals and groups in Western Australia. The Department of Sport and Recreation is the lead agency responsible for the implementation of government policy and initiatives in sport and recreation.
A key role of the department is to contribute to the healthy lifestyle of Western Australians by increasing physical activity in the community through sport and recreation. Strategic intent and direction Strategic Directions 5 WA’s sport and recreation industry has been guided by three to five-year strategic directions since 1997, giving the industry a framework in which to operate and develop. It has also guided State Government decision-making and funding directions and has been the catalyst for the achievement of a range of industry outcomes. The department’s Strategic Intent, including strategic goals and operations are developed around the industry, with the latest iteration SD5 2011-2015 available from the Department’s website.
