SUMMARY:SOLD OUT: Vision\, mobility\, and home modifications for falls prevention
DESCRIPTION:Older adults with vision impairments are twice as likely to fall than those without vision loss. A decreased visual function\, particularly impaired visual acuity\, contrast sensitivity\, glare sensitivity\, depth perception\, and visual field size\, can increase an individual’s falls risk. This can be attributed to an impaired ability to focus on near and far objects (visual acuity)\, distinguish edges in low contrast conditions (contrast sensitivity)\, and navigate the environment to avoid hazards (depth perception\, glare sensitivity\, and visual field size). \nIn older adults\, a decline in visual function can impair gait\, postural stability\, balance control\, step accuracy\, and fear of falling\, which in turn increases the risk of having a fall. Vision is vital to stabilising balance because it continuously provides the nervous system with information regarding body segment movements in relation to the environment. \nInjury Matters\, in partnership with Vision Australia\, will explore the Canadian Occupational Performance Measure (COPM)\, a screening tool used to detect changes in a client’s self-perception of occupational performance over time. This workshop will also explore low-cost options for home modifications\, signs of low vision to look out for\, and the impact of vision impairment when working with older adult clients\, with a chance to see the latest technology that Vision Australia offers for low or no-vision clients. \nWho should attend? \nThis workshop training suits physiotherapists and occupational therapists working with older adults in WA. \nRegister here

DESCRIPTION:Balance is the ability to maintain a stable and controlled body position when moving. Balance plays an important role in daily activities such as walking\, bending over to put shoes on\, driving a car\, or grocery shopping. Balance requires our body’s system to work together to control our movements. Older adults who have impaired balance are at great risk of falling and so Injury Matters’ Stay On Your Feet® program are hosting a half day workshop training\, aimed at fitness professionals who work with older adults\, which will go over: \n\nWhat a fall is and why it is important to try to prevent them.\nHow the ageing process and other health conditions impact on falls risk.\nWhat is normal and abnormal gait\, balance\, strength\, and flexibility and how these may impact on falls risk.\nHow to identify falls risk and implement safety during exercise.\nWhat recommended falls prevention and exercise strategies are and how to implement them.\nWhere to find falls prevention resources and help.\n\nWho should attend? \nThe workshop is aimed at fitness and exercise professionals\, therapy assistants\, allied health assistants\, nurses\, support workers\, aged care staff\, and anyone who wants to learn more about exercises to prevent falls in older adults. \nRegister here
