SUMMARY:Acting on the Commercial Determinants of Health for Injury Prevention
DESCRIPTION:Commercial determinants of health are the private sector activities that affect people’s health\, directly or indirectly\, positively\, or negatively; for example\, supply chains\, labour conditions\, product design and packaging\, research funding\, lobbying\, that impact a wide range of risk factors. Related to injury\, these include alcohol use\, physical activity\, injuries on roads and from weapons\, violence\, and mental health conditions. \nAs the Lancet Series on the Commercial Determinants of Health underlines\, many of the most significant risk factors for disease and injury – tobacco\, alcohol\, and unhealthy diet – are major industries and profit-drivers for some of the world’s biggest companies. It is time for a paradigm shift. Public health cannot and will not improve without action on the commercial determinants of health\, from the local to global level. New forms of public health governance are needed. \nThis workshop\, designed by Curtin University and in partnership with Injury Matters\, facilitated by Dr. Jonathan Hallett\, explores the impact of commercial determinants of health on injury outcomes in the WA population. The interactive workshop will also explore how to respond as a public health professional\, with advocacy strategies and case study activities. \nCourse Highlights \nCommercial Drivers: Explore the various commercial determinants of health within the injury prevention system in WA.\nEffective Advocacy: Learn strategies to effectively communicate and develop skills to represent public health interests persuasively and responsibly.\nFace-to-Face Workshop: Benefit from a hands-on three-hour workshop in Perth\, where expert facilitators will guide participants through interactive activities and real-world scenarios\, reinforcing key concepts and practices.\nExtended Online Support: Enjoy three months of access to valuable online resources\, including video tutorials\, reading materials\, discussion forums\, and interactive quizzes\, allowing you to continue learning at your own pace. \nWho should attend? \nThis course is ideal for early to mid-career injury prevention/health promotion/public health professionals\, environmental health officers\, community development officers\, and health promotion officers at Local Government bodies\, community health workers\, policy advocates\, and anyone involved in the injury prevention field in Western Australia. \n*This event has been rescheduled from November 2023 to February 2024. \nRegister here
