SUMMARY:Breaking Barriers: multicultural communities in WA
DESCRIPTION:Western Australia (WA) has a rapidly increasing multicultural population\, made up of a variety of different cultural communities\, each with their own unique identity and experiences. With almost half of Australians having a parent born overseas (48.2%) and 27.6% of the population being born overseas themselves\, it is more important than ever to ensure health services and organisations are accessible to all. \nThe unique demographics of multicultural communities in WA and several contributing factors can increase the risk of injury within WA’s multicultural communities. The increased risk of injury can be explained by low levels of language proficiency\, different understandings of injury\, minimal support networks\, cultural shame\, and stigmatisation. Injury Matters explores these barriers with key leaders and health professionals in the multicultural injury prevention space in a practical and engaging workshop. \nWe will hear from: \n\nPearl Proud\, Lead. Senior Practitioner. from Culturally Diverse Psychological Service on the cultural\, social\, and psychosocial impact on the health of the multicultural community\,\nRachel Pearce\, Health Services Manager at Ishar on how to address health service access barriers as health professionals working in the health sector\,\nand Henrietta Podgorska\, Communications and Engagement Senior Manager at Umbrella Community Care Services Inc. explain the importance of partnership and collaboration\, and how to communicate difficult topics\, with practical tips for engagement.\n\nThe workshop training aims to: \n\nIncrease knowledge of cultural\, social\, and psychosocial barriers to accessing mainstream health services for multicultural communities in WA\nIncrease awareness of communication and partnership strategies when promoting a health service in multicultural communities\nIncrease skills in engaging culturally and linguistically diverse communities in WA\nIncrease confidence in ensuring your health service is inclusive for the multicultural community of WA\nIncrease knowledge of resources and key stakeholders in the WA multicultural community\n\nWho should attend? \nThe workshop is aimed at health professionals who work in local government\, not-for-profit organisations\, NGOs\, community services\, public health and health promotion professionals who work with multicultural communities in WA. \nInjury Matters Cancellation and Refund Policy \n\nParticipants may request a refund or transfer their registration to another person if they are unable to attend.\nCancellation or requests to transfer registration to another person must be received in writing by emailing info@injurymatters.org.au within three(3) working days of the workshop.\nNo tentative bookings will be accepted.\nNon-attendance or cancellations received within two (2) working days of the start of the workshop will incur the full fee.\n\nIf you are experiencing financial hardship but would like to attend this workshop\, please contact info@injurymatters.org.au so we can accommodate for your needs. \nMorning tea will be provided. \nRegister here

SUMMARY:Youth alcohol and injury prevention forum
DESCRIPTION:Alcohol is the highest risk factor for injury. It increases the risk of violence\, intentional self-harm\, road crashes\, falls\, and drownings. Six ambulances are called to treat intoxicated West Australians aged 18 and younger every week\, with 12% of 12–17-year-olds being victims of an alcohol-related incident in 2019\, including verbal abuse\, physical abuse\, or being put in fear by someone under the influence of alcohol. The need to raise awareness of alcohol-related injury in WA has never been more important\, and communities want to understand how they can help prevent the early uptake of alcohol in young people. \nInjury Matters are holding a Youth Alcohol and Injury Prevention forum with a number of leading experts in the field to learn more about an effective community approach to modifying risk and protective factors for alcohol use within young people. We will hear from Professor John Toumbourou from Communities that Care\, Robert White from the Alcohol and Drug Foundation\, and the Safer Mandurah team talk about preventing harm from alcohol in the community. \nThis event aims to: \n\nIncrease knowledge of alcohol’s impact on injury in young people in WA\nIncrease awareness of risk and protective factors for alcohol use in young people\nIncrease awareness of evidence-based strategies and initiatives to prevent and reduce harm from alcohol to young people.\nIncrease knowledge and skills in implementing practical prevention-based strategies in the community\n\nWho should attend? \nThis forum is suitable for local government bodies\, stakeholders in the alcohol prevention space\, crime safety\, community development\, sports associations\, local sports clubs\, public health advocates\, policy and program coordinators/officers\, LDATs\, LDAGs\, metro and country health services\, and youth organisations/programs. \nThis forum can be attended online or in-person. SUMMARY:COVID-19 impact on mental health in older adults
DESCRIPTION:COVID-19 has had an impact on the mental health and well-being of older adults in Western Australia. Social isolation is a continuing problem for older adults and may lead to loneliness. Social isolation is the absence of relationships with family and friends on an individual level and with society on a broader level.
