SUMMARY:Dive into the data: Injury Epidemiology Online Workshop
DESCRIPTION:The role of epidemiology in public health has come to light recently due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However\, epidemiological information has always been a core construct of injury prevention due to its ability to characterise the occurrence of injury\, identify at-risk population groups and assist in evaluating injury prevention strategies. \nHow do we access and interpret epidemiological data? \nWA injury prevention practitioners are fortunate to have access to multiple sources of epidemiological data to assist in quantifying the impact of injury on the community\, however it can be challenging to interpret the various forms of data available. \nJoin Injury Matters with guest facilitator Dr Lauren Fortington\, from Edith Cowan University\, for the Dive into the data: Injury Epidemiology Online Workshop. Lauren is a Senior Research Fellow in injury epidemiology at ECU and a member of the Australasian Epidemiological Association. \nDuring the workshop Lauren will share her knowledge regarding interpreting epidemiological data\, to enable participants to understand the core constructs of data and apply it to their role. \nThis online workshop aims to: \n\nIncrease knowledge of the role of epidemiology in injury prevention.\nIncrease skills in interpreting epidemiological injury data.\nIncrease knowledge of how to access WA injury data.\nIncrease confidence to use epidemiological data to influence injury prevention initiatives.\n\nWho can attend? \nThis online workshop is suitable for anyone looking to clarify or grow their ability to interpret injury epidemiological data\, including; public health practitioners\, health promotion professionals\, local government workers\, WA Country Health staff\, recent environmental science graduates or undergraduate health science students. \nOnline workshop access requirements\nThis interactive workshop will be run on the Zoom Meeting Platform and will involve being placed in a breakout room to participate in a group activity and discussions. To take part in this workshop you will need: \n\nAccess to a reliable internet connection.\nA device with both a camera and microphone.\n\nRegister here

SUMMARY:A Lens on Falls: Vision and falls prevention among older adults
DESCRIPTION:As people age\, it is common for their visual function to decrease\, which is associated with an increased risk of falling. Older adults with vision loss are twice as likely to fall than older adults without vision loss. Vision plays a key role in the balance and control required to carry out daily activities with older adults relying more heavily on visual information to maintain their balance. Good vision also allows older adults to identify hazards or obstacles in their environment and navigate safely around them. \nInjury Matters\, through the Stay On Your Feet® program\, and in partnership with Vision Australia WA\, are hosting a 2-hour interactive training workshop for health professionals on vision and falls prevention in older adults. The workshop aims for health professionals to better understand how poor or reduced vision affects falls in older adults and to increase their knowledge in effective strategies to reduce falls. \nThis workshop aims to: \n\nIncrease knowledge of risk factors for falls in older adults and age-related eye conditions\nIncrease knowledge of prevention strategies for vision impairment among older adults\nIncrease knowledge of interventions to reduce falls risk among older adults with vision impairment\nIncrease skills in using appropriate vision technology to reduce the risk of falls in older adults with vision impairment\nIncrease knowledge of effective eye health service delivery across regional and remote areas\nIncrease skills in using Telehealth to provide eye services to older adults in rural and remote areas.\n\nInjury Matters Cancellation and Refund Policy \nParticipants may request a refund or transfer their registration to another person if they are unable to attend. Cancellation or requests to transfer registration to another person must be received in writing via email info@stayonyourfeet.org.au\nNon-attendance or cancellations received within two (2) working days of the start of the workshop will incur the full fee. \nIf you are experiencing financial hardship but would like to attend this workshop\, please contact info@stayonyourfeet.org.au so we can accommodate for your needs. \n  \n \n  \nRegister Here

SUMMARY:Falls Prevention and Neurological Conditions
DESCRIPTION:Neurological conditions have been recognised as a risk factor for falls. Common conditions seen to increase the risk of a fall include stroke and Parkinson’s disease. There are many ways in which physiological factors accompanying these conditions can increase this risk of falls. Due to the negative impact associated with falling\, it is important for practitioners working with patients diagnosed with a neurological condition to recognise this increased risk for falls and be able to assess and implement appropriate interventions. \nJoin us at our upcoming webinar ‘Falls Prevention and Neurological Conditions’\, presented by Anita Rattray\, Physiotherapist and Lisa Barry\, Occupational Therapist at Parkinson’s Clinic\, Osborne Park Hospital. The webinar will provide participants with knowledge of common neurological conditions which increase falls risk as well as strategies for reducing falls risk. \nThis webinar aims to: \n\nIncrease knowledge and understanding of common neurological conditions and their impact on falls risk.\nIncrease knowledge of strategies for preventing falls in people with neurological conditions.\nIncrease understanding of referral pathways for relevant services.\nIncrease knowledge of available resources to support clinical practice.\n\nRegister Here

SUMMARY:Medication and Falls In Older Adults Workshop
DESCRIPTION:In Australia\, it is estimated that 30% of people aged over 65 years living in the community sustain a fall at least once a year\, whilst in an aged-care facility\, 50% of residents experience one. \nFalls can result from a multitude of factors\, such as the use of medicines. Some medicines can produce different side effects such as drowsiness\, confusion\, blurred vision\, dizziness\, and postural hypotension\, which can all contribute and increase the risk of a falls incident. There are many negative effects that a fall can have on an individual (both acute and chronic)\, including pain and injury as well as psychological impacts such as anxiety\, a decrease in confidence and the development of a fear of falling\, all of which can lead to a loss of independence. \nDue to the magnitude of the issue\, it is important for pharmacists to be able to recognise and identify a patient who may be at higher risk for falls and feel confident in addressing this issue. \nInjury Matters\, through the Stay On Your Feet® program\, will deliver a 2-hour training workshop on ‘Medication and falls in older adults’ with presenters Dr Andrew Stafford and Dr Tin Fei Sim. The workshop will provide participants with the knowledge and confidence to identify and assess for falls risk in older adults and recommend the appropriate interventions. \nThis workshop aims to: \n\nIncreased knowledge of common medicines that can increase the risk of falls.\nIncreased knowledge in deprescribing for falls risk and what the current evidence suggests.\nIncreased skill in identifying patients who may have an increased risk of fall and discussing ways to prevent these.\nIncreased confidence in discussing medicines as a risk factor for falls.\nIncreased knowledge in identifying falls risk screening tools currently used in the Australian healthcare setting.\nIncrease confidence in discussing the role of pharmacists in reducing falls risks in older adults.\n\n \nThis workshop is aimed at pharmacy students\, early career and practising pharmacists. \nThis activity has been accredited for 1.5 hours of Group 1 CPD (or 1.5 CPD credit) suitable for inclusion in an individual pharmacist’s CPD plan\, which can be converted to 1.5 hours of Group 2 CPD (or 3.0 CPD credits) upon successful completion of relevant assessment activities. \nRegister here

SUMMARY:Understanding family carers falls concern and their management of older adults falls risks at home Webinar
DESCRIPTION:With Western Australia’s ageing population\, family carers are increasingly becoming essential support in falls prevention and care delivery for older adults living in the community. Carers’ concerns for older adults’ falls risk\, can have a severe impact on the psychological well-being and ability of family carers to prevent falls. Falls prevention programs that include family carers contribute to significant improvement in falls risk awareness and knowledge in carers and their care recipients. However\, maladaptive caring strategies adopted by carers could lead to dependence and increasing risk of falling among older adults at home. \nJoin Injury Matters for the ‘Understanding family carers fall concern and their management of older adults fall risks at home webinar’. A presentation will be provided by Marcus Ang\, Edith Cowan University who will discuss issues that contribute to concerns of family carers regarding risk of falling and the strategies they use to prevent older adults from falling at home.
