SUMMARY:Falls Forum: Vision Impairment and Falls Prevention
DESCRIPTION:Join Injury Matters\, in partnership with VisAbility WA\, on 15 May 2025 for the “Falls Forum: Vision Impairment and Falls Prevention” and gain insight into preventing falls among older adult clients with vision impairments. \nAs people age\, it is common for their visual function to decrease\, however this is associated with an increased risk of falling. Older adults with vision impairments are twice as likely to fall than older adults without vision loss\, with decreased visual function affecting factors such as balance\, stability\, and the ability to identify hazards in the environment. It is essential for health professionals working with older adults to support their clients with vision impairments by understanding the impacts of vision impairments on daily living and to increase their knowledge of relevant assistive technologies and home modifications. \nThis hybrid event will explore: \n\nA day in the life of someone with lived experience\nDifferent eye conditions and their impact on falls risk as well as strategies for management.\nAssistive technologies to support people with vision impairment and reduce falls risk\nHome modifications and community access for reducing falls risk among people with vision impairment\n\nWho should attend: \nEarly career Occupational Therapists\, GPs\, Nurses\, Support Workers and Optometrists. \nJoin the Falls Forum either online via Microsoft Teams (FREE) or attend in-person at VisAbility WA and enjoy canapés and networking ($15). \n* Networking and canapes from 5pm\, with the first speaker to commence at 5:30pm \nIn person Registration \nMicrosoft Teams Registration \n  \n

SUMMARY:Recognising and Responding to Elder Abuse in Older Adults Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Elder abuse is a serious public health and social issue\, estimated to effect 1 in 6 older adults in Western Australia. It can take many forms\, including financial\, social\, physical\, sexual\, psychological and emotional abuse\, and neglect\, and can occur in a range of different settings. Elder abuse can have ongoing health impacts on an individual\, such as physical injury\, poor mental health and increased risk of premature entry into residential aged care. \nAs with many forms of abuse\, it can be difficult for an individual experiencing elder abuse to speak out. It is vital that health and community professionals working with older adults in WA carry the skills to recognise and respond to elder abuse to ensure the safety of their clients and provide support to make informed decisions about their ongoing safety and wellbeing. \nJoin Injury Matters\, with guest facilitator\, Wendy Bennett\, from Advocare\, for the ‘Recognising and Responding to Elder Abuse in Older Adults’ online workshop\, where we will explore: \n\nElder abuse and its impact on older adults\nHow to recognise and respond to elder abuse\nOptions for clients experiencing elder abuse\nThe Elder Abuse Protocol and 5-step approach for action against elder abuse\nDepartment of Health and WA Country Health Services guidelines\nElder abuse policy and procedure for organisations (established / planned)\nAdvocare and how they can assist you\n\nThis webinar is for anyone working with older adults\, including home care service providers\, carers and support workers\, community workers\, and health and allied health professionals. SUMMARY:Bunbury - Preventing harm from alcohol and other drugs workshop
DESCRIPTION:Regional Bunbury – Preventing harm from alcohol and other drugs workshop\nAre you an allied health professional working with older adults? \nAs trusted healthcare providers\, allied health professionals play a crucial role in supporting older adults and are well-positioned to identify and support those at risk of alcohol-related harm. \nAlcohol is one of Australia’s most widely used drugs\, with Australian adults aged over 50 consuming alcohol more regularly than any other age group. In addition to drinking more frequently\, older adults are at greater risk of harm from alcohol due to physiological differences in how older adults metabolise alcohol and the presence of other co-morbidities. \nInjury Matters\, in collaboration with Professor Robert Ali and Professor Steve Allsop\, are delivering this FREE workshop to equip allied health professionals in the South West with the knowledge and skills to effectively identify and address alcohol and other drug (AoD) risks in their older adult clients/patients.This in-person workshop will focus on the application of the ASSIST-Lite (Alcohol\, Smoking and Substance Involvement Screening Test) and how to effectively utilise the tool with older adults. The ASSIST-Lite is a world-renowned evidence-based tool that supports a comprehensive approach to identifying and supporting individuals at risk of harm from alcohol and other drugs. It is vital that older adults at heightened risk of alcohol and other drug use are supported to access specialised support and therefore this workshop will provide information and resources to support allied health professionals to ensure that older adults are empowered to access the support that they need. \nFollowing the workshop participants will:\n• Recognise their role in identifying older adults at risk of alcohol and other drug harm and the importance of referring them to appropriate services.\n• Have an increased knowledge about the significance of conducting AoD screenings using the ASSIST-Lite tool.\n• Be skilled in applying the ASSIST-Lite screening tool effectively with older adults.\n• Have an increased confidence to conduct AoD screenings.\n• Be confident to make referrals to local support services when necessary. \nPresenter profiles:\nProfessor Robert Ali\nAssociate Professor Robert Ali AO MBBS FAFPHM FAChAM is one of Australia’s leading alcohol and other drug clinician-researchers. Dr. Ali has extensive knowledge of the ASSIST-lite tool and is very experienced in training health professionals on how to use it. \nProfessor Steve Allsop\nProfessor Allsop has a strong background in workforce development having been director of Clinical Education in two state government AoD services and as Director of a National workforce development centre of excellence. He has also worked on projects focusing on alcohol and the ageing population\, notably supervising an influential PhD in this domain. \n  \nRegister Here  \nComplimentary lunch and refreshments will be provided on the day. \nBy attending these workshops you can play a vital role in reducing the risk of harm to older adults. \nIf this location and/or dates do not meet your availability\, additional metropolitan workshops are also available. For more information click here. \nThese workshops are delivered by Injury Matters\, thanks to funding provided by Healthway. \n \n  \n

SUMMARY:SOLD OUT- Acting on the Commercial Determinants of Health for Injury Prevention
DESCRIPTION:Commercial determinants of health are the private sector activities that affect people’s health\, directly or indirectly\, positively\, or negatively; for example\, supply chains\, labour conditions\, product design and packaging\, research funding\, lobbying\, that impact a wide range of risk factors. Related to injury\, these include alcohol use\, physical activity\, injuries on roads and from weapons\, violence\, and mental health conditions. \nAs the Lancet Series on the Commercial Determinants of Health underlines\, many of the most significant risk factors for disease and injury – tobacco\, alcohol\, and unhealthy diet – are major industries and profit-drivers for some of the world’s biggest companies. It is time for a paradigm shift. Public health cannot and will not improve without action on the commercial determinants of health\, from the local to global level. New forms of public health governance are needed. \nBack by popular demand\, this workshop\, designed by Curtin University and in partnership with Injury Matters\, facilitated by Dr. Jonathan Hallett\, explores the impact of commercial determinants of health on injury outcomes in the WA population. The interactive workshop will also explore how to respond as a public health professional\, with advocacy strategies and case study activities. \nCourse Highlights \nCommercial Drivers: Explore the various commercial determinants of health within the injury prevention system in WA.\nEffective Advocacy: Learn strategies to effectively communicate and develop skills to represent public health interests persuasively and responsibly.\nFace-to-Face Workshop: Benefit from a hands-on three-hour workshop in Perth\, where expert facilitators will guide participants through interactive activities and real-world scenarios\, reinforcing key concepts and practices.\nExtended Online Support: Enjoy three months of access to valuable online resources\, including video tutorials\, reading materials\, discussion forums\, and interactive quizzes\, allowing you to continue learning at your own pace. \nWho should attend? \nThis course is ideal for early to mid-career injury prevention/health promotion/public health professionals\, environmental health officers\, community development officers\, and health promotion officers at Local Government bodies\, community health workers\, policy advocates\, and anyone involved in the injury prevention field in Western Australia. \nRegister here

SUMMARY:Perth Southern Suburb Preventing harm from alcohol and other drugs workshop
DESCRIPTION:Preventing harm from alcohol and other drugs among older adults\nAre you an allied health professional working with older adults? \nAs trusted healthcare providers\, allied health professionals play a crucial role in supporting older adults and are well-positioned to identify and support those at risk of alcohol-related harm. \nAlcohol is one of Australia’s most widely used drugs\, with Australian adults aged over 50 consuming alcohol more regularly than any other age group. In addition to drinking more frequently\, older adults are at greater risk of harm from alcohol due to physiological differences in how older adults metabolise alcohol and the presence of other co-morbidities. \nInjury Matters\, in collaboration with Professor Robert Ali and Professor Steve Allsop\, are delivering these FREE workshops to equip allied health professionals in the Perth Metropolitan area with the knowledge and skills to effectively identify and address alcohol and other drug (AoD) risks in their older adult clients/patients. These in-person workshops will focus on the application of the ASSIST-Lite (Alcohol\, Smoking and Substance Involvement Screening Test) and how to effectively utilise the tool with older adults. The ASSIST-Lite is a world-renowned evidence-based tool that supports a comprehensive approach to identifying and supporting individuals at risk of harm from alcohol and other drugs. \nIt is vital that older adults at heightened risk of alcohol and other drug use are supported to access specialised support and therefore this workshop will provide information and resources to support allied health professionals to ensure that older adults are empowered to access the support that they need. \nPerth Southern workshops:\n• Thursday 13th February 2025\, 9:00am -12:30pm\, and\n• Thursday 20th February 2025\, 9:00am – 12:30pm. \nPlease note that you are required to attend both half-day sessions to complete the training. \nFollowing the two half day workshops participants will:\n• Recognise their role in identifying older adults at risk of alcohol and other drug harm and the importance of referring them to appropriate services.\n• Have an increased knowledge about the significance of conducting AoD screenings using the ASSIST-Lite tool.\n• Be skilled in applying the ASSIST-Lite screening tool effectively with older adults.\n• Have an increased confidence to conduct AoD screenings.\n• Be confident to make referrals to local support services when necessary. \n  \nPresenter profiles:\nProfessor Robert Ali\nAssociate Professor Robert Ali AO MBBS FAFPHM FAChAM is one of Australia’s leading alcohol and other drug clinician-researchers.
