SUMMARY:Falls Forum: Vision Impairment and Falls Prevention
DESCRIPTION:Join Injury Matters\, in partnership with VisAbility WA\, on 15 May 2025 for the “Falls Forum: Vision Impairment and Falls Prevention” and gain insight into preventing falls among older adult clients with vision impairments. \nAs people age\, it is common for their visual function to decrease\, however this is associated with an increased risk of falling. Older adults with vision impairments are twice as likely to fall than older adults without vision loss\, with decreased visual function affecting factors such as balance\, stability\, and the ability to identify hazards in the environment. It is essential for health professionals working with older adults to support their clients with vision impairments by understanding the impacts of vision impairments on daily living and to increase their knowledge of relevant assistive technologies and home modifications. \nThis hybrid event will explore: \n\nA day in the life of someone with lived experience\nDifferent eye conditions and their impact on falls risk as well as strategies for management.\nAssistive technologies to support people with vision impairment and reduce falls risk\nHome modifications and community access for reducing falls risk among people with vision impairment\n\nWho should attend: \nEarly career Occupational Therapists\, GPs\, Nurses\, Support Workers and Optometrists. \nJoin the Falls Forum either online via Microsoft Teams (FREE) or attend in-person at VisAbility WA and enjoy canapés and networking ($15). \n* Networking and canapes from 5pm\, with the first speaker to commence at 5:30pm \nIn person Registration \nMicrosoft Teams Registration \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:Elder abuse is a serious public health and social issue\, estimated to effect 1 in 6 older adults in Western Australia. It can take many forms\, including financial\, social\, physical\, sexual\, psychological and emotional abuse\, and neglect\, and can occur in a range of different settings. Elder abuse can have ongoing health impacts on an individual\, such as physical injury\, poor mental health and increased risk of premature entry into residential aged care. \nAs with many forms of abuse\, it can be difficult for an individual experiencing elder abuse to speak out. It is vital that health and community professionals working with older adults in WA carry the skills to recognise and respond to elder abuse to ensure the safety of their clients and provide support to make informed decisions about their ongoing safety and wellbeing. \nJoin Injury Matters\, with guest facilitator\, Wendy Bennett\, from Advocare\, for the ‘Recognising and Responding to Elder Abuse in Older Adults’ online workshop\, where we will explore: \n\nElder abuse and its impact on older adults\nHow to recognise and respond to elder abuse\nOptions for clients experiencing elder abuse\nThe Elder Abuse Protocol and 5-step approach for action against elder abuse\nDepartment of Health and WA Country Health Services guidelines\nElder abuse policy and procedure for organisations (established / planned)\nAdvocare and how they can assist you\n\nThis webinar is for anyone working with older adults\, including home care service providers\, carers and support workers\, community workers\, and health and allied health professionals. SUMMARY:SOLD OUT- Acting on the Commercial Determinants of Health for Injury Prevention
DESCRIPTION:Commercial determinants of health are the private sector activities that affect people’s health\, directly or indirectly\, positively\, or negatively; for example\, supply chains\, labour conditions\, product design and packaging\, research funding\, lobbying\, that impact a wide range of risk factors. Related to injury\, these include alcohol use\, physical activity\, injuries on roads and from weapons\, violence\, and mental health conditions. \nAs the Lancet Series on the Commercial Determinants of Health underlines\, many of the most significant risk factors for disease and injury – tobacco\, alcohol\, and unhealthy diet – are major industries and profit-drivers for some of the world’s biggest companies. It is time for a paradigm shift. Public health cannot and will not improve without action on the commercial determinants of health\, from the local to global level. New forms of public health governance are needed. \nBack by popular demand\, this workshop\, designed by Curtin University and in partnership with Injury Matters\, facilitated by Dr. Jonathan Hallett\, explores the impact of commercial determinants of health on injury outcomes in the WA population. The interactive workshop will also explore how to respond as a public health professional\, with advocacy strategies and case study activities. \nCourse Highlights \nCommercial Drivers: Explore the various commercial determinants of health within the injury prevention system in WA.\nEffective Advocacy: Learn strategies to effectively communicate and develop skills to represent public health interests persuasively and responsibly.\nFace-to-Face Workshop: Benefit from a hands-on three-hour workshop in Perth\, where expert facilitators will guide participants through interactive activities and real-world scenarios\, reinforcing key concepts and practices.\nExtended Online Support: Enjoy three months of access to valuable online resources\, including video tutorials\, reading materials\, discussion forums\, and interactive quizzes\, allowing you to continue learning at your own pace. \nWho should attend? \nThis course is ideal for early to mid-career injury prevention/health promotion/public health professionals\, environmental health officers\, community development officers\, and health promotion officers at Local Government bodies\, community health workers\, policy advocates\, and anyone involved in the injury prevention field in Western Australia. \nRegister here
