SUMMARY:Creating Safer Communities: A Healthy Streets Approach to Preventing Injury
DESCRIPTION:Healthy Streets is an evidence-based approach to designing and managing streets that support health\, sustainability\, fairness and community well-being. This approach focuses on the continuous improvement of existing conditions to enhance everyday life for all community members. \nIn Western Australia\, local governments are required to develop Public Health Plans. These plans should consider how the built environment and local infrastructure influence community health outcomes\, including the prevention of injuries\, chronic disease and environmental health risks. Built environment and transport are two priority areas that local governments should consider when creating their public health plan to prevent injury. \nJoin Injury Matters\, with guest presenter Lucy Saunders from Healthy Streets\, for the “Creating Safer Communities: A Healthy Streets Approach to Preventing Injury” interactive workshop on Thursday\, 28 August 9:00 am – 12:00 pm\, where we will: \n\nGo through an introduction to the Healthy Streets Approach\nAssess the safety of nearby streets (subjectively and objectively)\nExplore Healthy Streets assessments and tools\nDiscuss how different groups are impacted by street features\nIdentify actions and next steps to make your street safer\n\nThere will also be the opportunity for Lucy to answer questions about Healthy Streets and how you can implement this Approach. \nOptional \nYou can send through photos and a case study of a street in your community\, and Lucy may provide feedback and advice. \nPlease include: \n\nStreet name\nPhoto of the street\nWhy you have chosen that street to be reviewed?\n\nPlease send your case study to: info@knowinjury.org.au \nWho should attend? \nLocal Government officers\, Community Safety officers\, Health Promotion officers\, Community Development officers\, Engineers\, Environmental Planners\, State Government stakeholders and Urban Planners. \nCost: $25 (including GST) \nRegister here:

SUMMARY:Shared Vision: Falls Prevention for Community Eye Health Practitioners
DESCRIPTION:As people age\, it is common for their visual function to decrease. However\, this is associated with an increased risk of falling\, with older adults with vision impairments being twice as likely to fall than older adults without vision loss. Eye care practitioners play an important role in falls prevention among older adults in the community\, with opportunities for collaboration and referral. \nThis is especially true in rural Western Australia\, with a rural workforce shortage and higher rates of eye conditions experienced among Australians living rurally than non-rural residents. \nJoin Injury Matters\, with guest speaker Jingyi Chen from the University of Western Australia\, for the “Shared Vision: Falls Prevention for Community Eye Health Practitioners” webinar on Tuesday\, 8 July 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm (AWST)\, where we will explore: \n\nThe link between vision and falls in older adults\nThe role Eye Care Practitioners have in falls prevention among older adults\nHow to incorporate falls screening into standard community consultations with older adults\nThe importance of access to rural eye care in preventing falls among older adults\nReferral pathways and opportunities for collaboration between eye care providers\n\nWho should attend? \nOptometrists\, Ophthalmologists\, Orthoptists\, Eye Care Practitioners working with older adults\, Eye Care Practitioners who work in rural and regional WA. \nRegister here
