SUMMARY:Understanding Diabetes and Falls Among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People
DESCRIPTION:Diabetes is a health condition that can cause high levels of glucose in the blood. It occurs when the pancreas cannot produce enough insulin or the body becomes resistant to it. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have higher rates of diabetes\, particularly among older adults. More than one third (34.6%) of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged over 55 live with diabetes\, compared to just 5.5% of Aboriginal people aged 18–34. \nFalls are the most common cause of injury leading to hospitalisation among Aboriginal people. Older adults with diabetes have an increased risk of falls\, recurrent falls and the rate of fracture following a fall.
