SUMMARY:Tai Chi for Arthritis and Falls Prevention - Instructor Training
DESCRIPTION:Tai Chi is one of the most effective strategies to reduce the risk of experiencing a fall due to its positive benefits for maintaining muscle and strength\, increasing endurance\, improving gait\, balance\, and mood. Tai Chi for Arthritis and Falls Prevention Instructor training\, developed by Dr Paul Lam\, is an evidence-based program to help health professionals working with older adults to become a certified Tai Chi for Health Institute Instructor. \nThis comprehensive\, practical\, and enjoyable Instructor Preparation Package contains essential material to learn how to be an effective and safe instructor of the Tai Chi for Arthritis & Falls Prevention program. The online and in-person components follow a natural learning sequence with an online portal that includes video guides from Dr Paul Lam at every step and a one-day in-person workshop run by Tai Chi for Health Institute Master Trainer Sam Sujatna in Perth\, WA. \nWho should register? \nThis training is suitable for physiotherapists\, occupational therapists\, and fitness instructors who work with older adults and want to implement Tai Chi classes as a falls prevention measure in their community. \nThe total cost of this training package amounts to around AUD $200\, with the Injury Matters-led workshop costing AUD $80. After completing this training package\, you will become a certified Tai Chi for Health Institute (TCHI) Instructor. As a certified instructor\, you will be able to help people improve their quality of life through Tai Chi and\, at the same time\, enhance your own Tai Chi skills. \nPlease note that you must complete both program steps and register for them at the same time. By doing so\, you are committing to completing the training and gaining certification. \n \nStep One (US$80)\nRegister for this online component of the training package\, which includes Dr. Paul Lam’s Tai Chi for Arthritis & Fall Prevention (TCAFP) program\, along with a specific sequence of learning materials\, as well as: \n\nAdditional videos to guide you through every part\nKnowledge units for Instructors\nQuizzes\n6 Webinar recordings\nDigital certificate after completion\, which you will need to provide to access Step Two\n\nRegister here for Step One \nAfter registration\, you will have access to this online content for one full year. However\, you will need to complete all required content and provide the certificate of completion prior to attending the workshop (Step Two). The estimated time to complete the online components is 2-3 weeks. Therefore\, we advise you to register for Step One no later than 17th April 2024 to access Step Two. The cost for this online component is not affiliated with Injury Matters as it is an external training portal. \nStep Two (AUD$80)\nRegister for our in-person one-day workshop on May 7th 2024\, facilitated by Tai Chi for Health Institute (TCHI) Master Trainer Sam Sujatna. This one-day workshop will cover: \n\nStay On Your Feet® overview\nTai Chi fundamentals\nSun style Tai Chi sequence\nSeated Tai Chi\n\nRegister here for Step Two

SUMMARY:Steady Steps Forward: Systems Thinking Approach in Fall Prevention for Older Australians
DESCRIPTION:This upcoming webinar will cover the critical issue of falls prevention among older Australians\, discussing both individual and systemic impacts. Falls significantly affect older adults and burden the healthcare system\, exceeding $2.3 billion annually. \nThe presenters\, Dr. Nathalia Costa\, Professor Kim Delbaere\, and Dr. Meghan Ambrens\, co-authors of the paper “A systems approach to assist policy action to prevent falls among community-dwelling older people in Australia\,” will present their findings from a thorough policy review\, highlighting gaps and identifying potential pathways for improvement. They use a systems-thinking approach to understand the complex factors contributing to falls\, and suggest actionable solutions for policy enhancement. Their research employs the Prevention Systems Change Framework (PSCF) to analyse the existing falls-prevention policies at the national and state levels. \nThe discussion will focus on essential questions regarding the current landscape of falls prevention policies\, needed changes\, and implementation strategies to improve outcomes. This session is aimed at healthcare professionals\, policymakers\, and researchers interested in public health and systemic change in falls prevention. \nThe webinar will be followed by a Community Falls Network meeting ending at 1.30 pm. The Injury Matters Community Falls Network aims to bring together health and community professionals to discuss key issues and share solutions in community falls prevention in WA. The Network meets quarterly via videoconference and in person. For more information or to join the Network\, contact Injury Matters Program Delivery Lead\, Suzanne Butler via 6166 7688 or sbutler@injurymatters.org.au. \nRegister here

SUMMARY:The link between foot health\, medications\, and falls among older adults
DESCRIPTION:Sore\, aching\, or tired feet make it difficult for an older person to stay active and independent\, and can affect how they walk. Foot problems can also be the first sign of more serious medical conditions such as diabetes\, circulation\, or nerve problems. Polypharmacy\, due to multiple medical conditions as we age\, is a major risk factor for falls. This webinar will have Dr. Amy Page\, a registered consultant pharmacist and qualified biostatistician from the University of Western Australia\, and Prof. Hylton Menz\, professor of podiatry at La Trobe University\, exploring the links between foot health and falls risk\, raising awareness of the link between polypharmacy\, foot health and falls\, while discussing ways in which health professionals can identify risk earlier when working with older adults. \nWho should attend? \nThis webinar training is aimed at podiatrists\, occupational therapists\, physiotherapists\, and allied health professionals. \nRegister here

SUMMARY:Falls Forum: Vision Impairment and Falls Prevention
DESCRIPTION:Join Injury Matters\, in partnership with VisAbility WA\, on 15 May 2025 for the “Falls Forum: Vision Impairment and Falls Prevention” and gain insight into preventing falls among older adult clients with vision impairments. \nAs people age\, it is common for their visual function to decrease\, however this is associated with an increased risk of falling. Older adults with vision impairments are twice as likely to fall than older adults without vision loss\, with decreased visual function affecting factors such as balance\, stability\, and the ability to identify hazards in the environment. It is essential for health professionals working with older adults to support their clients with vision impairments by understanding the impacts of vision impairments on daily living and to increase their knowledge of relevant assistive technologies and home modifications. \nThis hybrid event will explore: \n\nA day in the life of someone with lived experience\nDifferent eye conditions and their impact on falls risk as well as strategies for management.\nAssistive technologies to support people with vision impairment and reduce falls risk\nHome modifications and community access for reducing falls risk among people with vision impairment\n\nWho should attend: \nEarly career Occupational Therapists\, GPs\, Nurses\, Support Workers and Optometrists. \nJoin the Falls Forum either online via Microsoft Teams (FREE) or attend in-person at VisAbility WA and enjoy canapés and networking ($15). \n* Networking and canapes from 5pm\, with the first speaker to commence at 5:30pm \nIn person Registration \nMicrosoft Teams Registration \n  \n
