SUMMARY:Youth alcohol and injury prevention forum
DESCRIPTION:Alcohol is the highest risk factor for injury. It increases the risk of violence\, intentional self-harm\, road crashes\, falls\, and drownings. Six ambulances are called to treat intoxicated West Australians aged 18 and younger every week\, with 12% of 12–17-year-olds being victims of an alcohol-related incident in 2019\, including verbal abuse\, physical abuse\, or being put in fear by someone under the influence of alcohol. The need to raise awareness of alcohol-related injury in WA has never been more important\, and communities want to understand how they can help prevent the early uptake of alcohol in young people. \nInjury Matters are holding a Youth Alcohol and Injury Prevention forum with a number of leading experts in the field to learn more about an effective community approach to modifying risk and protective factors for alcohol use within young people. We will hear from Professor John Toumbourou from Communities that Care\, Robert White from the Alcohol and Drug Foundation\, and the Safer Mandurah team talk about preventing harm from alcohol in the community. \nThis event aims to: \n\nIncrease knowledge of alcohol’s impact on injury in young people in WA\nIncrease awareness of risk and protective factors for alcohol use in young people\nIncrease awareness of evidence-based strategies and initiatives to prevent and reduce harm from alcohol to young people.\nIncrease knowledge and skills in implementing practical prevention-based strategies in the community\n\nWho should attend? \nThis forum is suitable for local government bodies\, stakeholders in the alcohol prevention space\, crime safety\, community development\, sports associations\, local sports clubs\, public health advocates\, policy and program coordinators/officers\, LDATs\, LDAGs\, metro and country health services\, and youth organisations/programs. \nThis forum can be attended online or in-person. Morning tea will be provided if attended in-person. This event is free but registration is compulsory. \nRegister here

SUMMARY:COVID-19 impact on mental health in older adults
DESCRIPTION:COVID-19 has had an impact on the mental health and well-being of older adults in Western Australia. Social isolation is a continuing problem for older adults and may lead to loneliness. Social isolation is the absence of relationships with family and friends on an individual level and with society on a broader level. Good mental health contributes greatly to an overall feeling of well-being. Untreated mental health disorders in older adults can lead to diminished functioning\, substance abuse\, poor quality of life\, and increased mortality. \nJoin Injury Matters with guest speaker Deb Reveley from Brain Ambulance as we chat through the current evidence on the impact of COVID-19 on the mental health of older adults in WA\, and the interventions we as health professionals can promote for healthy ageing and reducing the impact of social isolation. \nThis session aims to: \n\nIncrease awareness of the impacts of COVID-19 on the mental health of older adults in Western Australia.\nIncrease knowledge of the mental health issues facing older adults in Western Australia.\nIncrease knowledge of the interventions to promote healthy ageing and reduce the impact of social isolation and loneliness.\nIncrease knowledge of barriers for older adults seeking assistance and intervention.\nIncrease knowledge of referral points for older adults requiring intervention.\n\nWho can attend? \nThis webinar is suitable for public health and health promotion professionals\, mental health advocates and professionals\, aged care workers\, support workers\, allied health workers\, and community services or organisations that work with older adults in the community setting. \nRegister here

SUMMARY:Dive into the data: Injury Epidemiology Online Workshop
DESCRIPTION:The role of epidemiology in public health has come to light recently due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However\, epidemiological information has always been a core construct of injury prevention due to its ability to characterise the occurrence of injury\, identify at-risk population groups and assist in evaluating injury prevention strategies. \nHow do we access and interpret epidemiological data? \nWA injury prevention practitioners are fortunate to have access to multiple sources of epidemiological data to assist in quantifying the impact of injury on the community\, however it can be challenging to interpret the various forms of data available. \nJoin Injury Matters with guest facilitator Dr Lauren Fortington\, from Edith Cowan University\, for the Dive into the data: Injury Epidemiology Online Workshop. Lauren is a Senior Research Fellow in injury epidemiology at ECU and a member of the Australasian Epidemiological Association. \nDuring the workshop Lauren will share her knowledge regarding interpreting epidemiological data\, to enable participants to understand the core constructs of data and apply it to their role. \nThis online workshop aims to: \n\nIncrease knowledge of the role of epidemiology in injury prevention.\nIncrease skills in interpreting epidemiological injury data.\nIncrease knowledge of how to access WA injury data.\nIncrease confidence to use epidemiological data to influence injury prevention initiatives.\n\nWho can attend? \nThis online workshop is suitable for anyone looking to clarify or grow their ability to interpret injury epidemiological data\, including; public health practitioners\, health promotion professionals\, local government workers\, WA Country Health staff\, recent environmental science graduates or undergraduate health science students. \nOnline workshop access requirements\nThis interactive workshop will be run on the Zoom Meeting Platform and will involve being placed in a breakout room to participate in a group activity and discussions. SUMMARY:Through the Looking Glass: Engaging Multicultural Communities within Injury Prevention and Safety Promotion online workshop
DESCRIPTION:WA has a rapidly increasing multicultural population\, consisting of a variety of different multicultural communities\, each with their own unique identity and experiences. The unique demographics of multicultural communities in WA add to the complexity of the contributing factors which can increase the risk of injury within multicultural communities. SUMMARY:Scooter-related Injuries Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Transport injuries are a leading cause of hospitalisations and fatalities in Western Australia. The variety in our transport routes\, demographics and preference for physical activity results in the use of differing transportation devices. \nJoin Injury Matters and the Australasian Injury Prevention Network for the ‘Scooter Safety Webinar’. This webinar will focus on some of these high-risk transportation devices by exploring the incidence of injury due to e-scooter and mobility scooter use. Special guests and experts in the space\, Professor Joan Ozanne-Smith and Professor Kristen Vallmuur will join us to share their expertise. \nProfessor Joan Ozanne-Smith heads the Injury Prevention Research Unit at Monash University’s Department of Forensic Medicine. Joan has worked to reduce the incidence of mobility scooter-related injuries\, with special interest in policy to improve mobility scooter safety. \nProfessor Kirsten Vallmuur is the Chair of Trauma Surveillance and Data Analytics in the School of Public Health and Social Work at the Queensland University of Technology. Kirsten has conducted extensive research into the safety of e-scooters as they emerge as a common means of transportation. \nThis webinar will provide participants with knowledge of: \n\nThe incidence of injury due to e-scooters.\nThe incidence of injury due to mobility scooters.\nThe key risk factors associated with using scooters.\nKey prevention initiatives required to reduce the incidence of injury among scooter users.\n\nThis webinar is delivered by Injury Matters via the Know Injury program. Know Injury\, funded through the WA Department of Health\, is a state-wide program aimed at preventing injury in WA.
