SUMMARY:Acting on the Commercial Determinants of Health for Injury Prevention
DESCRIPTION:Commercial determinants of health are the private sector activities that affect people’s health\, directly or indirectly\, positively\, or negatively; for example\, supply chains\, labour conditions\, product design and packaging\, research funding\, lobbying\, that impact a wide range of risk factors. Related to injury\, these include alcohol use\, physical activity\, injuries on roads and from weapons\, violence\, and mental health conditions. \nAs the Lancet Series on the Commercial Determinants of Health underlines\, many of the most significant risk factors for disease and injury – tobacco\, alcohol\, and unhealthy diet – are major industries and profit-drivers for some of the world’s biggest companies. It is time for a paradigm shift. Public health cannot and will not improve without action on the commercial determinants of health\, from the local to global level. New forms of public health governance are needed. \nThis workshop\, designed by Curtin University and in partnership with Injury Matters\, facilitated by Dr. Jonathan Hallett\, explores the impact of commercial determinants of health on injury outcomes in the WA population. The interactive workshop will also explore how to respond as a public health professional\, with advocacy strategies and case study activities. \nCourse Highlights \nCommercial Drivers: Explore the various commercial determinants of health within the injury prevention system in WA.\nEffective Advocacy: Learn strategies to effectively communicate and develop skills to represent public health interests persuasively and responsibly.\nFace-to-Face Workshop: Benefit from a hands-on three-hour workshop in Perth\, where expert facilitators will guide participants through interactive activities and real-world scenarios\, reinforcing key concepts and practices.\nExtended Online Support: Enjoy three months of access to valuable online resources\, including video tutorials\, reading materials\, discussion forums\, and interactive quizzes\, allowing you to continue learning at your own pace. \nWho should attend? \nThis course is ideal for early to mid-career injury prevention/health promotion/public health professionals\, environmental health officers\, community development officers\, and health promotion officers at Local Government bodies\, community health workers\, policy advocates\, and anyone involved in the injury prevention field in Western Australia. \n*This event has been rescheduled from November 2023 to February 2024. \nRegister here

SUMMARY:Creating inclusive spaces for people with disability
DESCRIPTION:Individuals with disability have the right to access services and public spaces with ease and without discrimination. Inclusion is the best method to ensure people with disabilities are given the same opportunities to participate in society across social\, educational\, and employment settings. Social inclusion is particularly important for people with disability\, where lacking access to crucial health services and not being able to access social events can lead to adverse health effects and social exclusion\, which can lead to physical and mental injuries. \n\n23% of people with disability aged 15-64 have difficulty getting to places needed\n39% of people with disability are not satisfied with their local community\n1 in 6 (17%) people with disability aged 15-64 experience social isolation\n\nInclusive spaces for people with disability is important to consider\, especially in light of the upcoming International Day of People with Disability on 3rd December 2023. Injury Matters\, in partnership with Paraplegic Benefit Fund\, are hosting an informative webinar for health professionals\, organisations\, design planners and Local Government bodies who are planning for their upcoming International Day of People with Disability events. This webinar will explore ways to create inclusive spaces and events for people with disability. Inclusive spaces not only benefit organisations\, but also improve health outcomes for people with disability and prevent injury outcomes in WA. \nRegister here

SUMMARY:Youth alcohol and injury prevention forum
DESCRIPTION:Alcohol is the highest risk factor for injury. It increases the risk of violence\, intentional self-harm\, road crashes\, falls\, and drownings. Six ambulances are called to treat intoxicated West Australians aged 18 and younger every week\, with 12% of 12–17-year-olds being victims of an alcohol-related incident in 2019\, including verbal abuse\, physical abuse\, or being put in fear by someone under the influence of alcohol. The need to raise awareness of alcohol-related injury in WA has never been more important\, and communities want to understand how they can help prevent the early uptake of alcohol in young people. \nInjury Matters are holding a Youth Alcohol and Injury Prevention forum with a number of leading experts in the field to learn more about an effective community approach to modifying risk and protective factors for alcohol use within young people. We will hear from Professor John Toumbourou from Communities that Care\, Robert White from the Alcohol and Drug Foundation\, and the Safer Mandurah team talk about preventing harm from alcohol in the community. \nThis event aims to: \n\nIncrease knowledge of alcohol’s impact on injury in young people in WA\nIncrease awareness of risk and protective factors for alcohol use in young people\nIncrease awareness of evidence-based strategies and initiatives to prevent and reduce harm from alcohol to young people.\nIncrease knowledge and skills in implementing practical prevention-based strategies in the community\n\nWho should attend? \nThis forum is suitable for local government bodies\, stakeholders in the alcohol prevention space\, crime safety\, community development\, sports associations\, local sports clubs\, public health advocates\, policy and program coordinators/officers\, LDATs\, LDAGs\, metro and country health services\, and youth organisations/programs. \nThis forum can be attended online or in-person.
